Impact Contreras has been seen as a bat-first catcher throughout his career, but to see the Cardinals go from giving him five years and $87.5 million over the winter to not trusting him at all behind the plate a little over a month into his first season is quite a surprise. His framing numbers have been sub-par this season, but presumably that's not a shock to St. Louis, as that's nothing new. It remains to be seen how often he'll play until he regains his team's trust as a catcher, since the Cardinals already have a depth chart crunch in the corner outfield and at designated hitter. Expect Andrew Knizner to see an uptick in playing time behind the plate in the meantime.

Adam Wainwright - Activated for season debut Wainwright (groin) was activated Saturday and will make his season debut against the Tigers.
Impact A groin strain sent Wainwright to the injured list to begin the season and will wind up costing him over a month. His 6.23 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in three rehab outings hardly inspire confidence, though those marks do come with a 13:2 K:BB. The 41-year-old righty maintain a respectable 3.71 ERA last season despite the fact that his strikeout rate dropped to 17.8 percent. Guillermo Zuniga was optioned in a corresponding move.

Tommy Edman - Gets Saturday off Edman will sit Saturday against the Tigers, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Impact Edman started 20 of the Cardinals' first 21 games at shortstop, but his playing time has taken a hit since Paul DeJong was recalled in late April. In 13 games with DeJong on the roster, Edman has started five times at second base and four times at shortstop while finding himself on the bench on four occasions. DeJong starts at shortstop Saturday with Brendan Donovan starting at second base.

The Cardinals will certainly be hoping Gorman's back issue is a minor one, as the second-year slugger has hit seven homers in 29 games this season while slashing .265/.348/.531.

Impact Barrera is a 28-year-old backstop with a career .231/.317/.315 slash line in 51 major-league games. The Cardinals didn't send down any catchers as part of the series of moves which accompanied Barrera's call-up, so it looks as though he'll be merely the third catcher behind Willson Contreras and Andrew Knizner for now.

Impact Goldschmidt has opened May by going 6-for-17 (.353) with four doubles over four contests. The first baseman is now slashing .312/.403/.520 with four home runs, 16 RBI, 18 runs scored, 14 doubles and three stolen bases through 32 games on the season. He's still one of the best hitters in the majors at age 35, though his power has yet to show up in full force so far.

Andrew Knizner - Hits first homer Knizner went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Tigers.
Impact Knizner got the Cardinals on the board in the third inning with his solo shot, which was his first homer and fifth hit of the season.
