Shane Baz - Loses despite quality start Baz (0-1) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings Friday, striking out six and taking a loss against the Rangers.

Impact Making his first MLB appearance since July 10, 2022, Baz delivered a quality start on 92 pitches. He looked impressive outside of an ugly three-run third inning. His fastball averaged 96.2 mph and topped out at 99.1. Baz posted a 4.12 ERA with a 44:23 K:BB across 39.1 frames with Triple-A Durham prior to his promotion. The 25-year-old's spot in the rotation could be in question once Jeffrey Springs (elbow) is ready to return. As of now, Baz is in line to face the Yankees at home next week.

Justin Sterner - Sent down to minors The Rays optioned Sterner to Triple-A Durham on Friday, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports.

Impact Sterner was up as bullpen protection for a couple days but didn't make an appearance. Shane Baz -- who will start Friday's game against the Rangers -- will fill Sterner's roster spot.

Shane Baz - Officially recalled for start The Rays recalled Baz from Triple-A Durham on Friday, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports.

Impact He will start Friday in Texas against the Rangers, taking the rotation spot vacated by Aaron Civale, who was traded to the Brewers earlier this week. It will be the first major-league start since July of 2022 for Baz, who has been brought along slowly as he comes back from Tommy John surgery. The young right-hander had been heating up at Durham in June, collecting a 1.57 ERA and 35:10 K:BB across 23 innings. Baz will have a good shot to remain in the Rays' rotation for the rest of the season and needs to be picked up in any fantasy leagues where he's still available.

Brandon Lowe - Reaches four times in win Lowe went 3-for-5 in Thursday's win over the Royals with a double, a homer and three runs scored while also drawing a walk.

Impact Lowe doubled in his second trip to the plate before coming around to score four batters later on a Jonny DeLuca single, extending Tampa Bay's lead to four runs. The second baseman then added a solo homer in the sixth and went on to reach four times in the contest - the first time he's done so this season. Lowe's three hits on the night also marked a season high and he's now homered three of his last four games. Over that stretch he's batting .333 (5-for-15) with three RBI and six runs scored.

Jonny DeLuca - Homer, three hits in win DeLuca went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in Thursday's win over Kansas City.

Impact DeLuca jumped on a hanging sinker from Alec Marsh in the second inning and sent it over the wall in left field for his third home run of the season, extending the Rays' lead to three runs. The outfielder then added an RBI single in the following frame and went on to reach three times in the contest. The long ball was DeLuca's first since May 18 against Toronto and he's now tallied multiple hits in two of his last three starts. However, his average still sits at .180 on the campaign following Thursday's three-hit performance.

Pete Fairbanks - Allows one run in save Fairbanks picked up the save over the Royals on Thursday, allowing one run on one hit over one inning while striking out one.

Impact Fairbanks entered the contest with a three-run lead in the bottom of the ninth and retired the first two batters in succession before surrendering a solo homer to Bobby Witt. The right-hander was then able to get Vinnie Pasquantino to ground out for the final out of the game, securing his 14th save of the season. Fairbanks has now converted each of his last four save attempts, though he's also allowed a run in four of his last nine appearances.

Zach Eflin - Shaky in win Eflin (5-5) picked up the win over the Royals on Thursday, allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits and one walk over five innings while striking out three.

Impact Eflin didn't have his best stuff Thursday, surrendering runs in four of the six innings in which he appeared, though the latter run would not be charged to him on account of a fielding error from Richie Palacios. Despite those struggles, the veteran right-hander was still able to secure his fifth win of the season and the fourth win in his last five decisions (spanning nine starts). Eflin has now gone at least five innings in five consecutive starts, though he's given up multiple runs in four of those outings, raising his ERA to 4.19 on the season.
