‘A bit older and smarter,’ former Nats prospect Wil Crowe gets fresh start with Pirates Wil Crowe was traded to Pittsburgh in the deal that sent Josh Bell to the Nationals this winter.

Impact After allowing an RBI double to Daniel Vogelbach in the first inning, Crowe settled in for a solid outing. He later walked the leadoff batter in the sixth inning and was charged with a run when that batter scored against David Bednar. The 26-year-old struck out a career-high eight batters and allowed fewer than three runs in an outing for the first time since May 8. Crowe now owns a 6.75 ERA and 36:18 K:BB in nine appearances this season.

Impact Crowe will take over the rotation spot vacated by Mitch Keller, who was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday. The Pirates brought up Crowe in a corresponding move, and after he went unused out of the bullpen in Saturday's loss to the Brewers, he'll now get the chance to pick up his eighth start of the season. Fantasy managers should temper expectations for Crowe after he posted a 7.26 ERA and 1.77 WHIP in 31 innings with the Pirates prior to being demoted to Triple-A for a brief spell.

Impact He didn't fare very well in 31 innings with the big club earlier this year (7.26 ERA, 1.77 WHIP), and he logged a single clean inning in his lone appearance at Triple-A on June 8. Typically a starter by trade, perhaps the Pirates are transitioning him into a relief role. However, Mitch Keller was optioned Saturday, so there is a vacant spot in the rotation.

Impact Crowe's demotion comes as little surprise after he was lit up for 11 earned runs on 13 hits and four walks in 5.1 innings between his last two starts. Chase De Jong will temporarily take over Crowe's spot as Pittsburgh's No. 5 starter, but he may only be keeping a spot warm in the rotation for Trevor Cahill (calf), who could return from the injured list within the next week or two.

Impact Crowe started off strong, holding the Royals to a single run over the first three innings. That's where his success would come to an end, unfortunately, starting with a two-run home run by Salvador Perez in the fourth inning.
