Massive penalty handed down McDowell has been deducted 100 driver and owner points after NASCAR found that the team modified a single source supplied part.
Impact This is basically the same penalty that was handed down earlier in the year to Brad Keselowski when NASCAR found that the team had intentionally modified a supplied part. McDowell was coming off his eighth top-10 finish of the season at Pocono, but this will certainly halt some momentum. Crew chief Blake Harris will be suspended for the next four races as well. This drops McDowell further down in the standings, but the fact still remains that he needs to win to make the playoffs for the second straight season. With two road courses and Daytona in the final five races before the cutoff, a win is certainly on the table for McDowell. If he were to make the playoffs, McDowell would also be docked 10 points to start due to these infractions.
