Practice limitations to continue Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that the 49ers will continue to manage Mitchell's (knee) reps on the practice field this week, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.

Impact Mitchell has been bothered by a knee injury since also picking up a concussion during a Week 13 loss at Seattle. He subsequently missed the next three games, but he's been active for the past two outings, logging at least 50 percent of snaps on both occasions en route to a combined 44 touches for 215 yards from scrimmage and one receiving TD. Last week, Mitchell followed up a DNP on Wednesday with a limited session Thursday and full practice Friday before being cleared of a designation entirely for San Francisco's eventual Week 18 win at the Rams. At the very least, he appears as if he'll have some practice limitations ahead of Sunday's wild-card game in Dallas.

Impact Mitchell did not carry an injury designation heading into this matchup, which has been a rare occurrence during an injury-filled rookie campaign. The 2021 sixth-round pick finishes the regular season way ahead of expectations with 1,100 combined yards and six total touchdowns in 11 games. It will be very interesting to see how the 49ers treat Mitchell's role next season when the team's running-back corps heals up, as he has clearly established that he can produce as the lead rushing option in a complex offensive scheme. Assuming Mitchell doesn't land on the injury report during practice this week, the rookie will lead San Francisco's backfield in a playoff matchup against the Cowboys next week.

In his first matchup with the Rams, back in Week 10, Mitchell took 27 carries for 91 scoreless yards and finished without a target in a 31-10 win for the Niners.

Impact Not only did Mitchell work with the 49ers training staff on the side Thursday, he mixed into some drills, too. The activity was notable considering he didn't participate at all Wednesday as he continues to tend to knee irritation. The issue didn't stop Mitchell from tallying 21 touches on 36 offensive snaps this past Sunday against the Texans, as opposed to one touch on 19 such plays between reserves Jeff Wilson and JaMycal Hasty. Assuming Mitchell gains clearance to play this weekend at the Rams -- whether it's on Friday's injury report or prior to Sunday's 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff -- he should remain San Francisco's lead running back Week 18.
