Named Week 1 starter Coach Jerod Mayo has informed his team that Brissett will be the Patriots' starting quarterback in Week 1 against the Bengals, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Impact A shoulder issue that Brissett sustained in New England's preseason finale is evidently not a concern and the veteran QB is now slated to face Cincinnati on Sept. 8. As a result, rookie first-rounder Drake Maye will serve as the team's backup out of the gate this season, though eventually he's destined to ascend to the top of the depth chart.

Jacoby Brissett Still Believes He's Patriots' Week 1 Starter Over Drake Maye The Patriots have yet to commit to a starting quarterback, though Jacoby Brissett seems to expect he’ll be QB1.

No concern about shoulder Brissett (right shoulder) said Tuesday that he feels "100 percent fine" and is ready for the start of the regular season, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.

Impact It's not surprising given that Brissett played two more snaps and threw a pair of accurate passes after taking a hard hit on the opening drive of Sunday's preseason loss to Washington. The Patriots planned on playing him for just one series anyway before bringing rookie QB Drake Maye into the game. Coach Jerod Mayo acknowledged Monday that Maye outplayed Brissett during the preseason, but Mayo also suggested he may name the veteran as the Week 1 starter, saying, "We've all seen the horror stories of rookie QBs getting thrown to the wolves," per Chad Graff of The Athletic. Mayo hasn't said when he plans to name his starter for the regular-season opener at Cincinnati.
