Struggles in preseason start Brissett started Thursday's 14-13 preseason loss to the Eagles and completed three of seven passes for 17 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.
Impact Brissett played the first three drives before giving way to Drake Maye, who led the offense to a field goal on his first possession and added a rushing touchdown later in the second quarter. While Maye is still adjusting to the NFL after being drafted third overall in 2024, it was Brissett who made a rookie mistake on the Patriots' second drive, throwing an interception in the end zone. Brissett's edge in experience (48 regular-season starts) is the reason that he's favored to be New England's Week 1 starter, but he hasn't bolstered his case by completing only three of 10 passes through two preseason games, so the veteran quarterback may still have something to prove in the preseason finale against Washington on Aug. 25.

Quiet opening series Thursday Brissett started the Patriots' 17-3 preseason win over the Panthers on Thursday and failed to complete any of his three pass attempts.
Impact Brissett handed off to Rhamondre Stevenson on his first play before throwing the three straight incompletions. The veteran signal-caller's brief appearance wasn't surprising, and his empty stat line won't have any bearing on his standing on the Patriots' quarterback depth chart. Rookie Drake Maye, who followed Brissett and played one series Thursday, presumably has a chance to lay claim to the No. 1 quarterback job with a strong enough preseason, but the pecking order will presumably remain unchanged heading into New England's second preseason game against the Eagles next Thursday night.

To open preseason as starter Coach Jerod Mayo said Tuesday that the plan is for Brissett to start Thursday's preseason opener against the Panthers, Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston reports.
Impact Mayo said "everyone who is healthy enough to play in the game, will play," per Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site, so Brissett figures to have command of the full first-team offensive unit. New England's starters likely won't play more than a few series, and Brissett could have a further cap on his reps if the team also wants rookie third-overall pick Drake Maye to also get some work in with the first-team unit. Albert Breer of SI.com reports that Brissett has shown out as the best quarterback throughout training camp, so the veteran remains the favorite to start Week 1 under center, though Maye has quietly also shown progress.
