The rookie then completed 13 of 20 passes for 126 yards and a TD, adding three carries for 17 yards while leading New England to seven points and a missed field goal across five drives. Mayo acknowledged Monday that Maye outplayed Brissett the past few weeks, but the coach also hinted at some hesitancy to start the rookie Week 1, saying "we've all seen the horror stories of rookie QBs getting thrown to the wolves," per Chad Graff of The Athletic. The Patriots likely will name a starter at some point this week.

Impact Brissett started the first two preseason games and completed three of 10 passes for 17 yards (with one interception) over the course of four unimpressive drives. Drake Maye has fared better coming off the bench and reportedly has a chance to get the nod Week 1, but Mayo and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt both recently said they still view Brissett as their starting quarterback.
