Remains sidelined Monday Brown (shoulder) won't practice Monday, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.

Impact The Chiefs open their regular-season slate Thursday night against the Ravens, and coach Andy Reid acknowledged to McMullen that the wideout is not expected to be available for the contest. Though Brown appears on track to be officially ruled out by the team ahead of Week 1 action, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com relays that Reid has noted that Brown's progress in his recovery has been very encouraging. In his anticipated absence versus Baltimore, fellow WRs Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy should have an opportunity to make their mark in fantasy lineups out of the gate.

Impact Edwards-Helaire regularly missed practices during training camp due to what seems to be a recurring illness, and he also revealed in July that he deals with post-traumatic stress disorder. The exact nature of Edwards-Helaire's current ailment remains unspecified, but being placed on the NFI list will rule him out for at least the first four games of the season, and position Samaje Perine for a key backup role behind starting running back Isiah Pacheco. Meanwhile, UDFA Carson Steele bumps up into the No. 3 spot.

Impact Perine didn't sign with the Chiefs until this past Wednesday, but that won't prevent him from being able to play in Kansas City's first game of the campaign. The veteran running back may not be fully up to speed on the playbook and thus could be held to limited work, and even when he's fully familiar with the team's system it's not clear how much work he'll log behind starting running back Isiah Pacheco. In addition to Perine, Kansas City's backup RBs include Clyde Edwards-Helaire (illness) and intriguing rookie Carson Steele.

Impact Brown was given a 4-to-6 week recovery timetable after suffering a sternoclavicular injury Aug. 10, so Reid is simply offering confirmation that his earliest possible return date will come Week 2 versus the Bengals. It's possible that Brown will need longer than that to get full healthy, but the Chiefs' decision not to place him on short-term IR is a vote of confidence from the team that he will need to miss less than four games. For Week 1, Patrick Mahomes' top receiving targets will be TE Travis Kelce, second-year wideout Rashee Rice, rookie first-round pick Xavier Worthy and offseason addition Justin Watson.
