Joshua Dobbs - First QB used after starter Dobbs was the first backup quarterback to enter Sunday's exhibition contest for San Francisco.
Impact Dobbs wound up completing 57 percent of his passes for 133 yards and a rushing touchdown. Fellow backup Brandon Allen started the last preseason contest ahead of the Passtronaut, but the players reversed roles while serving as the backups against the Saints. Brock Purdy (2-6, 11 yards) is the unquestioned starter despite some rusty throws Sunday, but Dobbs may have leaped ahead of Allen based on both production and usage as Week 1 approaches.

Jacob Cowing - Shines in second preseason game Cowing caught four of five targets for 51 yards and took a carry for 19 yards in Sunday's 16-10 preseason win over the Saints.
Impact Cowing got extensive playing time in the second and third quarters, highlighted by a 39-yard gain on a deep pass down the sideline shortly before halftime. Four of his five touches produced first downs, with the fifth being a five-yard loss on a screen pass where he unsuccessfully reversed field on a blown-up play. It was a nice performance, but the rookie fourth-round pick probably won't get much playing time early in the season even if the Niners fail to work out a contract with Brandon Aiyuk.

Cody Schrader - Slow start to exhibition schedule Schrader gained 15 yards on seven carries and added one reception on three targets for five yards in a preseason win over the Saints.
Impact Schrader struggled to find running room for the second exhibition game in a row, finishing both contests with a per-carry average well below three yards. The undrafted rookie still has some work to do in terms of earning a roster spot following the upcoming preseason finale against the Raiders.

Impact Purdy made his preseason debut while a myriad of his teammates remain resting in anticipation of the regular season. The 24-year-old didn't get much work in the three drives he was active for, but no one should be evaluating the Iowa State product on what will likely be his lone preseason appearance of 2024. Once the regular season gets under way, Purdy will have his full arsenal of playmakers to dissect opposing defenses with.

Impact The team doesn't sound overly concerned with Mason's injury, as he appears healthier than the team's other top running backs at the moment, but he got the night off Sunday nonetheless. Mason's next chance to take the field will come in Friday's preseason finale against the Raiders.

Impact Williams was able to walk off the field under his own power after sustaining the injury. He signed with the 49ers on Wednesday after spending last season with the Chargers, finishing with 32 tackles (16 solo), including 1.0 sacks, and two fumble recoveries over 14 regular-season games. Williams is competing for a depth spot at defensive takcle behind starters Maliek Collins and Javon Hargrave.
