Andrew Abbott - Fans seven in no-decision Abbott (8-5) did not factor into the decision Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks over 4.1 innings in a 7-5 loss against the Pirates. He struck out seven.

Impact Abbott mostly cruised through the first three innings before serving up a solo homer to Ke'Bryan Hayes in the top of the fourth and an additional solo shot to Henry Davis in the top of the fifth. The rookie left-hander still managed to generate a lot of whiffs and will carry a respectable 3.70 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 119:44 K:BB into his final regular-season start next week at Cleveland.

Matt McLain - On track for Tuesday Manager David Bell said McLain (oblique) remains on track to be activated from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Impact McLain resumed taking batting practice earlier this week and is nearing the end of his recovery from the right oblique strain that has kept him on the shelf since late August. The 24-year-old infielder had delivered an impressive .290/.357/.507 slash line with 16 homers and 14 steals across his first 89 major-league games prior to suffering the injury.

Rece Hinds - Active at Double-A Hinds (undisclosed) was activated from the 7-day injured list Tuesday for Double-A Chattanooga.

Impact The Lookouts only have a couple games left this season, but at least Hinds' injury was minor and only cost him 10 days. Hinds was a strikeout machine earlier in the year (42.7 K% in first 49 games), but he is slashing .323/.396/.668 with 18 home runs, 11 steals and an acceptable 24.7 percent strikeout rate over his last 220 at-bats. Given that the Southern League switched out the pre-tacked baseballs in early-July, it would seem that this recent run from Hinds is a better example of his true talent than his early season mediocrity. The former third baseman primarily played right field this year while also seeing time in left field and at designated hitter. He will need to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason if the Reds want to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.

Connor Phillips - Sticks in rotation Phillips is scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Pirates at Great American Ball Park.

Impact After striking out seven and limiting the Twins to two runs on three hits and one walk over seven innings in his most recent start Monday, Phillips looks like he'll stick in the Reds rotation over Ben Lively. With off days Thursday, Monday and next Thursday, the Reds look as though they'll be able to close out the regular season with a streamlined four-man rotation as they aim to chase down a wild-card spot. Assuming Phillips is able to hold his own in the matchup with the Pirates, he would line up for one final start the following weekend in St. Louis.

Impact Diaz's line looks much worse than what actually transpired: a 34.6-mph infield single, a stolen base with a throwing error that moved the runner to the third, then a 70.4-mph soft liner to drive in a run. Following a walk, the closer was replaced by Sam Moll. After a double steal and intentional walk, Jorge Polanco singled in two runs, both charged to Diaz. This was just Diaz's third blown save in 40 opportunities.
