Impact The 32-year-old righty gave up six earned runs in five innings with more walks (five) than strikeouts (four) during his rehab assignment. Suarez could eventually start working in a setup role, but he will probably be eased back in low-leverage situations.

Impact Avila had made 15 of his previous 18 appearances with El Paso as a starter, but he ended up working behind Aaron Brooks on Wednesday as the Triple-A club treated the game as a bullpen day. The Padres haven't provided an explanation behind the decision, but it's possible that Avila worked in relief in an effort to keep him fresh ahead of a possible spot start this weekend in Detroit. The Padres will need a starter Saturday to fill in for the injured Michael Wacha (shoulder), and Avila could be a logical choice to step in, given that he has a spot on the 40-man roster and has been starting in the minors. Ryan Weathers is another candidate to get the call-up from Tripe-A to fill in for Wacha.

Ha-Seong Kim - Collects 18th steal Kim went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base in Wednesday's 2-0 win over the Blue Jays.

Impact On a night when offense was at a premium, Kim was at the center of San Diego's only rally in the fifth inning, getting hit by a pitch, swiping second on the back half of a double steal with Trent Grisham and then coming home on a Manny Machado single. Kim has come flying out of the All-Star break, batting .321 (9-for-28) in six games to boost his slash line on the season to .264/.352/.416 with 11 homers, 18 steals, 33 RBI and 49 runs in 91 contests.

Josh Hader - Notches 23rd save Hader struck out two in a scoreless ninth inning Wednesday to record his 23rd save of the season in a 2-0 win over the Blue Jays.

Impact He did hit a batter. but Hader then fanned Alejandro Kirk and George Springer to stifle any chance at a Toronto rally. Hader has converted 10 of 11 save chances since the beginning of June while not allowing an earned run during that stretch, posting a 1.17 WHIP and 22:9 K:BB in his last 13.2 innings.

Yu Darvish - Blanks Jays for seventh win Darvish (7-6) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing four hits and three walks over six scoreless innings in a 2-0 victory over Toronto. He struck out seven.

Impact The veteran right-hander was brilliant, generating 31 called or swinging strikes among his 100 pitches as he delivered his second straight quality start and seventh of the season. Darvish has had trouble maintaining any success in 2023 -- the quality start streak of two is the longest he's managed -- and since the beginning of June he sports a 4.02 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 46:16 K:BB through 40.1 innings. He'll try to keep rolling in his next outing, likely to come at home early next week against the Pirates.
