Steven Matz - Unravels in 10th inning Matz (0-7) allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and struck out two in one inning to take the extra-inning loss versus the Giants on Wednesday.
Impact This is Matz's first loss since moving to the bullpen. He's given up four runs (three earned) over seven innings with a 7:0 K:BB in that span, though he's also yielded two hits and hit two batters. The southpaw is still on the outside looking in for the Cardinals' starting plans, but Matthew Liberatore hasn't exactly run away with the No. 5 starter job with mixed results over his last three outings. Matz is at a 5.49 ERA, 1.66 WHIP and 52:20 K:BB over 57.1 innings this season, and he'll likely remain in a bullpen role until the struggling Cardinals opt to mix up the rotation.

Giovanny Gallegos - Allows game-tying homer Gallegos blew the save in Wednesday's 8-5 loss to the Giants, allowing a two-run home run while striking out two and walking one.
Impact Gallegos appeared to be working his way out of trouble after issuing a leadoff walk to LaMonte Wade Jr. to begin the ninth, retiring the next two batters he faced. He then got ahead 0-2 in the count before running it full and eventually surrendering a game-tying, two-run home run to Mike Yastrzemski. The reliever would get out of the inning with the score still tied, though the Cardinals would go on to fall 8-5 in the tenth, marking the team's fifth straight loss. Gallegos has now blown two of his last three save attempts while also allowing three home runs so far in the month of June. He had allowed just two home runs all season coming into this month.

Tommy Edman - Crushes grand slam in loss Edman went 1-for-4 with a grand slam in Wednesday's loss to the Giants.
Impact Edman had gone 26 games since his last home run before crushing a second-inning grand slam off Anthony DeSclafani to put the Cardinals up 4-2. He's now recorded just three extra-base hits in June, hitting .155 over that stretch, and has seen his average progressively decline with each passing month. The grand slam was the second of his career.

Jordan Montgomery - Strikes out seven in no-decision Montgomery did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks over 6.1 innings in a 8-5 loss against the Giants. He struck out seven.
Impact It wasn't a pretty start for Montgomery, as he failed to retire any of the first five batters he faced in the contest before escaping the inning with only two runs allowed. He settled in after that, however, retiring 11 consecutive hitters between the second and sixth innings, five by way of strikeouts. Unfortunately, Giovanny Gallegos was unable to hold the lead in the ninth, leaving Montgomery stuck with another no-decision. Wins have been hard to come by for the left-hander, as he's been hit with a loss or no-decision in eight starts this season in which he's allowed three runs or fewer.

Impact The hope is that Nootbaar will get in a few rehab games before rejoining the Cardinals prior to their trip to London to face the Cubs next weekend. Nootbaar has been out all month with a back injury. When he does return, he would figure to push Tommy Edman -- who has been playing center field -- back to the infield.

Impact Contreras will effectively get two days to rest up, as the Cardinals are off the schedule Thursday before returning to action Friday versus the Mets. Jack Flaherty - Rough night against San Fran Flaherty (3-5) took the loss Tuesday as the Cardinals were routed 11-3 by the Giants, coughing up six runs on 10 hits and three walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out three.
Impact The right-hander extended his streak of starts without serving up a homer to six, but keeping the ball in the park didn't do him much good Tuesday as the Giants banged out eight singles and two doubles off him. Considering Flaherty had a 1.50 ERA and 33:13 K:BB in 30 innings over those five prior outings, this performance doesn't appear to herald a return to his shakier early-season form. The 27-year-old will look to put the bad night behind him and get back into a groove in his next start, likely to come early next week on the road against the Nationals.
