Paul DeJong - Hits homer Sunday DeJong went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 8-7 win over the Mets.

Impact After slumping a bit last week, DeJong has rebounded to go 6-for-23 (.261) with two homers over his last six games. The shortstop's third-inning blast gave the Cardinals a 6-4 lead Sunday. For the season, he's at a .228/.298/.444 slash line with 10 homers, 21 RBI, 25 runs scored and three stolen bases over 46 contests. With Tommy Edman taking over in center field, DeJong has seen an extended run as the starting shortstop, despite his mediocre work at the plate in recent weeks.

Impact Nootbaar had hits in his first three at-bats in Sunday's rehab game with Triple-A Memphis, including a long home run. It sounds like two rehab games are all Nootbaar will require, and he should return to a regular role atop the Cardinals' lineup. Impact Goldschmidt had a brief slump earlier in June, but he's gone 10-for-29 (.345) with two homers and six RBI over his last seven games. The first baseman has also struck out 10 times in that span, which is a bit unusual for a fairly patient hitter. He's at a .287/.381/.493 slash line with 12 homers, 33 RBI, 45 runs scored, 19 doubles and seven stolen bases over 69 contests. Goldschmidt also has a 22.3 percent strikeout rate and 12.7 percent walk rate, roughly in line with his career norms as he pieces together another strong campaign.

Impact His third-inning shot off Kodai Senga proved to be the game-winning hit, giving the Cards an early 4-1 lead. Walker extended his hitting streak to 10 games in the process, a stretch that's seen him bat .400 (14-for-35) with three of his five big-league homers on the year as well as a much-improved 17.9 percent strikeout rate. There are still rough patches in his game to work on -- he's gone 0-for-3 on steal attempts during his hitting streak -- but the 21-year-old has merely scratched the surface of his talent so far.

Jordan Hicks - Dominant in first save of year Hicks struck out the side in a scoreless ninth inning Saturday to record his first save of the season in a 5-3 win over the Mets. He also hit a batter and threw a wild pitch.

Impact Giovanny Gallegos was expected to step into the closer role for the Cardinals while Ryan Helsley (forearm) was on the shelf, but instead Gallegos worked the eighth inning Saturday against the middle of the Mets' order while Hicks handled the ninth. The save was his first since 2019, as injuries and a failed conversion to starting took him out of the team's high-leverage mix, but it seems the flamethrowing right-hander will get another chance to help lock up wins for St. Louis. After a bumpy first month of the season, Hicks has a 3.00 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 28:11 K:BB through 18 innings since the beginning of May.

Adam Wainwright - Gets back in win column Wainwright (3-1) picked up the win in Saturday's 5-3 victory over the Mets, giving up three runs on seven hits and two walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out three.

Impact Homers by Brandon Nimmo and Luis Guillorme accounted for all the damage off Wainwright, but the 41-year-old got enough run support to weather them. He tossed 93 pitches (53 strikes) en route to his first quality start of the season and first win since May 23, and this was the first time in eight starts he even managed to finish the sixth inning. Wainwright's numbers have largely fallen off a cliff in 2023, and his 5.56 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 11.9 percent strikeout rate give him little fantasy appeal outside of deep formats where nearly every pitcher with a rotation spot is rostered. His next start lines up to take place an ocean away, as he's set to take the bump against the Cubs next weekend in London.
