Brendan Donovan - Idle versus southpaw Donovan is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates.
Impact The lefty-hitting Donovan will get a breather in the series finale with St. Louis opposing a left-handed starting pitcher (Rich Hill). Donovan had started in each of the Cardinals' last 10 games, slashing .273/.415/.576 with three home runs and two stolen bases. With all of Tyler O'Neill (back), Dylan Carlson (ankle) and Lars Nootbaar (back) on the injured list, Donovan should be a near-everyday player in the corner outfield for the foreseeable future.

Impact Contreras had started behind the dish in each of the Cardinals' last four games, so he'll be getting a breather Sunday with the series finale beginning at 11:35 a.m. ET. Andrew Knizner will step in as St. Louis' starting catcher, working in a battery with Miles Mikolas.

Impact The 26-year-old earned his first big-league call-up after slashing .313/.434/.641 with 29 extra-base hits (18 home runs, 11 doubles) to go with an impressive 17.8 percent walk rate and 21.7 percent strikeout rate over 244 plate appearances with Memphis. Though his bat certainly looks big-league ready, Baker's lack of defensive flexibility may hurt his chances of earning a permanent role with the Cardinals. He's played only at first base in the minors, and with reigning National League MVP Paul Goldschmidt already entrenched at that position, Baker's path to playing time will likely come solely at designated hitter. Baker is further hurt by the fact that he's a right-handed hitter, potentially relegating him to the short side of a platoon.

Impact His eighth-inning blast off Colin Holderman gave the Cardinals some life, but they couldn't complete the comeback. Gorman has slowed down since his May hot streak, batting .179 (7-for-39) over his prior 10 games coming into Saturday, but the 23-year-old is still on pace for a breakout season -- he's up to 14 homers, matching his total from 2022 in 36 fewer contests, with a .276/.364/.564 slash line and 44 RBI in 53 games.

Impact He took Luis Ortiz deep in the second inning to get the Cardinals on the board. The 31-year-old's first campaign with St. Louis has not gone according to plan so far, and through 55 contests he carries a career-worst .215/.301/.365 slash line with six homers, four steals, 22 runs and 26 RBI.

Impact The veteran southpaw dropped his seventh straight decision, a streak that dates back to April 13, but there wasn't much more he could have done to avoid it. An hour-long rain delay in the third inning didn't shake his focus, as Montgomery kept Pittsburgh off the board through the first four frames, but a Nolan Arenado error in the sixth led to three unearned runs and the St. Louis offense couldn't climb out of the hole. Montgomery will take a 4.23 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 60:18 K:BB through 66 innings into his next outing, which is likely to come at home next weekend against the Reds.

Impact Andre Pallante got into trouble in the seventh inning, prompting Gallegos' entry into the game. Gallegos has started to falter a bit recently, allowing six runs over his last four innings across four appearances.
