Impact The 23-year-old delivered the first run of the contest with an RBI double during the eighth inning, and he came around to score on a wild pitch after stealing third base. The late double extended Gorman's hit streak to 15 games, and he's batting .377 with five doubles, six homers, 17 RBI and 12 runs during that stretch.

Giovanny Gallegos - Notches fifth save Gallegos struck out two and allowed a run on two hits and no walks over 1.1 innings to earn his fifth save in Thursday's 2-1 victory at Cincinnati.

Impact The right-hander stranded two runners to finish the eighth inning and returned for the ninth, but the Reds broke the shutout with a double and a single before Gallegos closed things out. The run breaks a string of eight straight appearances without giving up an earned run for the 31-year-old, who now owns a 2.18 ERA and 20:4 K:BB across 20.1 innings this year. Impact The right-hander delivered his third straight quality start and has covered seven frames in each of his past two outings. Mikolas had a horrible beginning to the campaign with 16 runs allowed over his first three outings, but he's rebounded in eight starts since with a 2.47 ERA and 33:11 K:BB over 47.1 innings.

Alec Burleson - Nabs third straight start Burleson will start at first base and bat fifth in Thursday's game against the Reds.

Impact Burleson will stick in the lineup for the third game in a row, this time manning first base in place of a resting Paul Goldschmidt after making his prior two starts in left field. The Cardinals should have room in the starting nine for the lefty-hitting Burleson against right-handed pitching while both Tyler O'Neill (back) and Dylan Carlson (ankle) are on the shelf, though Burleson likely doesn't have a long leash on a strong-side platoon role. Brendan Donovan and Oscar Mercado are both capable of playing alongside Lars Nootbaar in the outfield and are performing better at the plate of late than Burleson, who has posted a .570 OPS in 20 games over the past month.

Óscar Mercado - Starts again Thursday Mercado will start in right field and bat ninth in Thursday's game against the Reds.

Impact Mercado will stick in the lineup for the fourth time in five games, with the 28-year-old picking up three starts in right and one in center field during that stretch. While the Cardinals are without the services of both Tyler O'Neill (back) and Dylan Carlson (ankle), Mercado looks as though he could have a fairly clear path to steady at-bats, especially if he continues to thrive at the plate. Steven Matz - Remains winless Matz (0-6) took the loss Wednesday as the Cardinals were routed 10-3 by the Reds, coughing up six runs on 11 hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out two.

Impact Nine of Cincy's 11 hits were singles, but it's still hard to chalk this one up entirely to bad BABIP luck on Matz's part. He has yet to complete six innings in any of his 10 starts this season and has issued multiple free passes in seven of them, and his 19.4 percent strikeout rate and 8.6 percent walk rate are his worst numbers in five years. The veteran southpaw will take a 5.72 ERA and 1.75 WHIP into his next outing, which is currently scheduled for early next week at home against the Royals. If Matthew Liberatore has another solid performance Friday, however, it wouldn't be surprising if the Cards used their upcoming two-day break May 31-June 1 to shuffle their rotation and drop Matz from the picture.

Matthew Liberatore - Starting Friday Liberatore will start Friday against the Guardians, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Impact Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Liberatore would get another start during the team's weekend series, and now the 23-year-old lefty has a date set in place. Liberatore put on a good performance (5.0 IP, 0 ER, 6 K) and earned a win during his first start against Milwaukee, but he was later hit around in a relief appearance versus the Dodgers. If he's able to hold his own against Cleveland, there's a solid chance Liberatore remains in the Cards' rotation.

Matthew Liberatore - Will get weekend start Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Wednesday that Liberatore will start one of the team's three games this weekend in Cleveland, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Impact There was talk of Liberatore being used out of the bullpen Tuesday night against the Reds, but that wasn't required as St. Louis rolled to an 8-5 victory. The 23-year-old left-hander tallied six strikeouts over five scoreless innings in his first major-league start of the season last Wednesday against the Brewers before struggling in a relief appearance Sunday versus the Dodgers. He should be an attractive fantasy option as he returns to the Cardinals' rotation against a light-hitting Guardians team.

Impact The switch-hitting outfielder will begin taking BP from the left side of the plate within the next few days as he continues his recovery from a left ankle sprain.
