The 28-year-old righty has given up runs in just two of his 11 outings this season, though he's only 3-for-6 in save chances and has a somewhat bloated 3.75 ERA since he allowed five runs between those two contests.

Impact Nootbaar is on a tear now, going 9-for-14 (.643) over his last three games. That's the kind of spark the Cardinals need from their leadoff hitter against right-handed pitchers, but the rest of the lineup has been a bit too inconsistent. Nootbaar's surge has him up to a .304/.442/.420 slash line with two home runs, three steals, seven RBI and 10 runs scored through 20 contests.

Impact He took Spencer Turnbull deep in the fifth inning, giving the Cardinals a 5-3 lead that the pitching staff couldn't protect. Arenado snapped a 20-game homer drought in the process, a stretch in which he stumbled to a .190/.238/.215 slash line. Adam Wainwright - No-decision in 2023 debut Wainwright didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 6-5 extra-inning loss to the Tigers, giving up four runs on eight hits over five-plus innings. He struck out five.
Impact Activated from the IL earlier in the day after completing his recovery from a groin injury, the 41-year-old gave St. Louis three scoreless frames in his season debut before beginning to fade, eventually getting pulled after 90 pitches (62 strikes) when he gave up back-to-back hits to lead off the sixth inning. Wainwright was still in position to pick up the win until Detroit tied it up in the seventh. The workload is encouraging, and despite his age he has thrown over 190 innings in each of the last two seasons, so Wainwright isn't expected to need extra rest between starts now that he's healthy. He'll likely take the mound for his second start of 2023 next weekend in Boston.
