Mechanical Failure at Phoenix Larson suffered a mechanical failure and finished 34th in the Ruoff Mortgage 500 NASCAR Cup Series race at Phoenix Raceway Sunday afternoon.

Impact The Hendrick Motorsports star raced from the rear to the front quickly in this 312-lap event. Larson appeared to have a Top-5 finish in hand, but disaster would strike on lap 239. His No. 5 Chevrolet would suffer a broken valve spring and retire to the garage for the day. The DNF was his second of the season.

Starting from Rear Due to unapproved adjustments to address a steering issue, Larson will start at the rear of the field on Sunday at Phoenix Raceway, Hendrick Motorsports PR reports.

Impact The steering adjustments caused Larson to forfeit his seventh-place spot on the starting grid. It's a setback to be sure. However, as Larson has shown us repeatedly the last two seasons, he can overcome the starting in the rear obstacle. Chances are very good that he'll be back inside the Top 10 by the end of the first stage Sunday at Phoenix.

Impact The reigning champion started on the outside pole and raced among the leaders all afternoon at Las Vegas. I late caution would open the door for the driver of the No. 5 Chevrolet to play some strategy. Larson would take two tires on the final pitstop and race hard with teammate Alex Bowman over the closing laps for the win. He would come up short in that battle but still collect an impressive runner-up finish. It was Larson's second Top-5 finish of the season.
