Wins Atlanta Pole McDowell won the pole for the Ambetter Health 400 NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Saturday. He turned a fast lap of 178.844 mph.

Impact The Front Row Motorsports veteran would be the driver that many didn't expect to surprise Saturday at the Atlanta oval. McDowell would advance into the final round of 10 drivers to run for the pole and he would go out last of the group. He would knock Joey Logano from atop the scoring pylon seven-hundredths of a second to claim his first-ever pole position in NASCAR's top division. McDowell will roll off first Sunday and challenge for the win in the Ambetter Health 400.

Mechanical Problem at Daytona McDowell had mechanical problems and finished 36th in the Daytona 500 NASCAR Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Monday evening.

Impact The former Daytona 500 winner looked strong in the early going as he would lead 6 laps from the outside pole and battle at the front. However, he'd soon have problems and would drop back in the field after stage 1. A suspected electrical problem would send the No. 34 Ford to the garage to make repairs. Once McDowell returned, he'd be several laps down to the leaders and running off the pace. He'd finish a distant 36th-place.
