Impact After giving up three runs over 1.2 innings while serving as Arizona's opener Sunday, Ruiz will be cast off the 40-man roster to clear room for Merrill Kelly (calf) to return from the injured list. The 28-year-old righty holds a 5.89 ERA and 1.65 WHIP through 44.1 innings this year and will now look to join his third team of the season.

Merrill Kelly - Activated for start Tuesday Kelly (calf) was activated from the 15-day injured list ahead of his start Tuesday against the Cardinals, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
Impact Kelly is back in the Diamondbacks' rotation after missing about four weeks because of a blood clot in his lower right leg. He did not go out on a minor-league rehab assignment but reportedly got his pitch count up to around 75 in a recent simulated outing. The 34-year-old stands 9-4 with a 3.22 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 98:37 K:BB through 95 innings (16 starts) this season.

Impact Chafin chalked up the outing to poor execution, per Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. The right-hander got to two strikes on six of seven batters, but he could not put batters away. "Going for too many punch-outs, I think, and ended up walking guys, and we saw what happened," Chafin said. It was the second straight blown save for Chafin, who last worked a save opportunity July 5. He's one of a trio of relievers -- along with Scott McGough and Miguel Castro -- that manager Torey Lovullo has mixed and matched late in games. All three have had rough outings within the last week, which could open the door for Kevin Ginkel or perhaps a trade-deadline acquisition.
