Jordan Walker - Homers in loss Walker went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and a walk in Wednesday's 10-9 loss to the Marlins.

Impact Walker put the Cardinals ahead with the ninth-inning blast, which came with two outs and two strikes. It ultimately postponed the inevitable, as Jordan Hicks blew the save chance. After hitting safely in 17 straight games to close out June, Walker's bat has cooled in July -- he's gone just 4-for-24 over his first six contests this month. The rookie is at a .286/.351/.452 slash line with seven homers, 24 RBI, 18 runs scored, seven doubles and three stolen bases through 47 contests.

Jordan Hicks - Slips up Wednesday Hicks (1-5) took the loss and a blown save Wednesday versus the Marlins, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk while striking out one in one-third of an inning.

Impact The Cardinals took the lead in the top of the ninth inning, but Hicks' own throwing error allowed the Marlins to score the winning run. Over his previous seven appearances, he'd given up just one run while striking out 10 across 7.2 innings, picking up five saves and a hold in the process. Hicks has generally been good since stepping into the closer role with Ryan Helsley (forearm) out. For the season, Hicks is at a 4.15 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 53:23 K:BB, five saves and six holds through 34.2 innings.

Steven Matz - Comes on in long relief Wednesday Matz tossed 2.1 innings out of the bullpen in Wednesday's 10-9 loss to the Marlins, surrendering two earned runs on three hits and one walk while striking out two batters.

Impact Heading into the week, Matz looked to be a candidate to start Wednesday, but the Cardinals instead had rookie Matthew Liberatore take the hill on three days' rest. Liberatore recorded just one out on 21 pitches and was shelled for four earned runs before the Cardinals called upon Dakota Hudson (2.2 innings) and Matz to work multiple frames out of the bullpen. With Adam Wainwright (shoulder) moving to the injured list earlier Wednesday, the Cardinals have an opening in the rotation again Sunday, but Matz could be passed over for the assignment in favor of Liberatore once again. Both Matz (32 pitches) and Hudson (52 pitches) handled heavier workloads than Liberatore on Wednesday and could be less fresh for Sunday.

Tyler O'Neill - Doubles in rehab game O'Neill (back) went 1-for-3 with a double and a strikeout in his second rehab game Wednesday with Triple-A Memphis, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Impact O'Neill went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts in his rehab debut Tuesday, so Wednesday's stat line qualifies as an improvement. He's been serving only as Memphis' designated hitter thus far and will likely have to prove his health with some outfield action before the Cardinals consider activating him from the 60-day injured list. The 28-year-old has been sidelined since early May due to lingering back issues.

Nolan Arenado - Drives in two, doubles three times Arenado went 3-for-5 with three doubles, two RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's 10-9 loss against the Marlins.

Impact Arenado doubled in each of his first two at-bats, with the latter one scoring Lars Nootbaar and Paul Goldschmidt to bring the Cardinals back within three runs of the Marlins. He again doubled to lead off the seventh before coming around to score on a Wilson Contreras single, making it a one-run game. The third baseman is now hitting .368 through five games in July to go along with six doubles, three RBI and four runs scored. He's also hit safely in seven of his last eight games.

Nolan Gorman - Mashes 17th homer Gorman went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI in Wednesday's loss to the Marlins.

Impact Gorman's two-run shot off Bryan Hoeing in the top of the third tied the game at 5-5, finishing off a five-run inning for St. Louis. The second baseman had gone hitless over his last 10 at-bats before the third-inning homer and it was only his second long ball since June 9. He's still hitting just .188 to begin the month of July after hitting .143 in June and he'll look to build off Wednesday's performance.

Matthew Liberatore - Gets lit up in first inning Liberatore did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk over one-third of an inning against the Marlins.

Impact Liberatore got shelled immediately Wednesday, surrendering four consecutive hits and a walk to open the bottom of the first before finally getting Jean Segura to fly out to left for the first out. The lefty then gave up another single to Dane Myers to make it a four-run inning for the Marlins before being relieved by Dakota Hudson. It was a disastrous outing for Liberatore after he hurled 2.2 scoreless innings against the Yankees in his first appearance this season on July 1.

Impact Prior reports suggested that the Cardinals would start Steven Matz, but they've instead decided to give the ball to Liberatore, who will be pitching on short rest. While Liberatore will be working on just three days' rest after starting Saturday versus the Yankees, he threw only 56 pitches in that outing. Liberatore hasn't gone more than 4.1 innings in any of his last three starts, holding a 6.75 ERA and 6:5 K:BB in 10.2 frames over that time.

Manager Oliver Marmol hasn't revealed whether Matz will be available in relief Wednesday, but if the veteran southpaw goes unused, he'll likely be a candidate to fill the spot in the rotation vacated by Adam Wainwright (shoulder), who was placed on the 15-day injured list earlier in the day. Wainwright had been lined up to make his next start Sunday versus the White Sox.
