Jim Mora: UCLA's QB competition could spill into the season

Published May. 1, 2015 4:02 p.m. ET

Jim Mora recruited arguably the nation's best quarterback in five-star recruit Josh Rosen. Yet, Mora is not ready to anoint him UCLA's starter for the 2015 season. That's because others like Jerry Neuheisel and Asiantii Woulard have been waiting on deck for some time now.

All reports would indicate that Rosen outperformed the group during UCLA's final spring practice at the Rose Bowl. But the competition has just begun. When UCLA heads into fall camp in San Bernardino later this summer, there's a chance Mora still won't name a starter. The competition just might spill into the season.

Mora spoke with Pac-12 reporters during a teleconference on Thursday.

“Heck, we might go three games and not know who the starter is,” Mora said via the Los Angeles Times. “We could use the first three games to see where we are at quarterback. As we go, we’ll get a better feel for our football team.”

Of course, this could be Mora playing mind games. He has three veteran quarterbacks in his roster, and handing the keys to a true freshman after right spring camp could potentially divide the group. Rosen can make his case, once again, come fall camp in August.
